Career

Pandit Birju Maharaj aka Brij Mohan Nath Mishra started his dancing career from childhood. He had a passion for dance at an early age, due to which he started performing with his father “Acchan Maharaj” as a child.

Later, when Birju Maharaj was nine years old, his father died, then he started training with his uncle.

Birju Maharaj also practiced Hindustani classical music. He headed the Bharatiya Kala Kendra, the Kathak Kendra and, after working in New Delhi with his uncle, until his retirement in 1998. Later Birju Maharaj also opened his dance school, Kalashram.

Among the achievements of Birju Maharaj, he received many awards like Padma Vibhushan, Andhra Ratna, National Nritya Shiromani Award and Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award in 1986.

Pandit Birju Maharaj aka Brij Mohan Nath Mishra received the Filmfare Award for Best Choreography in 2016 for Mohe Rang Do Laal in the movie Bajirao Mastani.
