Career
Neeraj Chopra was born on 24 December 1997 in Khandara village, Haryana.his father Satish Kumar is a farmer. His mother’s name is Saroj Devi and he has two sisters.
Neeraj was first introduced to the spear while trying to lose weight at the Panipat Stadium. when he saw the athletes playing javelin throw, Neeraj decided to play the game.
When he threw 40 meters without training, Jaiveer Chaudhary, impressed by Neeraj’s ability, started coaching him. When Neeraj bought his first spear in 2014. Its cost was Rs 7000.
He is an Indian javelin thrower and an officer in the Indian Army. He recently won a gold medal for India at the Tokyo Olympics 2021.
Early training
Trained under “Uwe On” one of the most famous coaches in the world.Neeraj Chopra is the first Indian to win a gold medal in track and field athlete.
India is famous for its prolific sportspersons, but track and field athletes have rarely made a big mark on the sport at the international level.
Chopra set a record of 86.48m in the IAAF World U20 Championship 2016. He is the first Indian athlete to win a world title in U-20 track and field.
Neeraj Chopra was also chosen as the flag bearer at India’s opening ceremony at the 2018 Asian Games. He threw 88.06m in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and won the gold medal.
Chopra won a new national record throw of 68.40m at the 2012 Junior Nationals in Lucknow.
The following year, entered its first international competition, the World Youth Championships in Ukraine.
He won his first silver international medal at the 2014 Youth Olympic Qualification in Bangkok.
After this, in the first throw of more than 80 meters in 2015, he made a world record throw of 81.04 meters in the junior category at the All India Inter-University Athletics Meet.
He won the gold medal in the 2016 South Asian Games with a throw of 84.23m, equaling the Indian national record.
2016 Junior World Champion and Army induction
Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Poland by setting a world junior record of 86.48m.
Impressed by Chopra’s early Asian Games performance, he enlisted as a Naib Subedar (JCO) in the Rajputana Rifles of the Indian Army and later was discharged to continue his training.
2017–2021
Chopra won the gold medal in the Asian Athletics Championships 2017 with a throw of 85.23m. He broke the national record in the Doha Diamond League with a throw of 87.43m.
Got an opportunity to represent India in the Asian Games and Chopra was made the flag bearer of the Indian contingent during the Parade of Nations.
Later in the 2018 Asian Games, she won the gold medal in the javelin throwing competition by setting a new Indian national record of 88.06 meters.
He was also honored with the Arjuna Award from the Government of India.
During 2019, Chopra missed the ongoing 2019 World Championships in Doha when he was undergoing surgery due to a bone fracture in his right elbow.
Tokyo Olympics
At the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games, Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal with 87.58m in the final on 7 August, becoming the Olympic gold medalist in athletics since India’s independence.
